Writing Center

Registered credit students at the Extension School, whether beginning or veteran writers, can meet with Writing Center tutors who will help them look critically at their writing. The Center does not provide proofreading or editing services; instead, students can discuss with tutors such writing topics as thesis, organization, focus, style, and format. Individual sessions last 50 minutes. Students may sign up by calling the Writing Center, (617) 495-4163. Since tutoring services are in high demand, students should make appointments in advance. No more than five appointments per student may be scheduled each term.
The Writing Center, located in Grossman Library, is open September 29 to January 15 in the fall and February 17 to May 20 in the spring. The Center's hours are Monday and Tuesday, 5-9 pm, and Wednesday and Thursday, 3-7 pm.

Borrowing privileges and HOLLIS. Admitted Extension School degree and certificate candidates with Harvard University photo IDs have borrowing privileges at Widener, Hilles, Lamont, and Baker libraries. Admitted degree and certificate candidates also have access to electronic resources that are available on the Harvard Online Library Information System (HOLLIS).
Enrolled Extension School graduate-credit students, who are not admitted candidates but who need borrowing privileges at Widener Library, may purchase a special borrower's card for $100 per term from the Privileges Desk in Widener Library. Students must bring their Extension School registration confirmations and some form of photo ID when purchasing borrower's cards.
Phillips Reading Room. Enrolled Extension School students who are not degree or certificate candidates may request an access card for Phillips Reading Room, Widener Library, by presenting their registration confirmations and some form of photo ID at the Privileges Desk. This card allows unlimited use of the Reading Room for one semester. Students will not have access to the stacks, but they can request that materials be paged to a desk in the Reading Room.
